Creating a food blog: where to start?

Want to create your own food blog and don’t know where to start? This article is made to guide you in starting your blog.

  1. Get started
  2. Choose domain name
  3. Choose your platform
  4. Host your website
  5. Choose your appearance or theme

1. Get started

As with everything, the hardest step is to get started! If you’ve been thinking about it for a long time and you’ve been thinking about starting your food blog for a while, then now is the time to start! This is the only way to know if blogging is your thing.

And contrary to what one might think it is rather easy. You don’t need any computer or programming knowledge to start your food blog. After reading this article, you’ll be good to go!

2. Choose your domain name

This step is very important because once chosen, it is difficult to change the domain name.

Your domain name should also match your brand name. Even though blogging is still a hobby, over time you will need to build a personal brand. The domain name must reflect this brand and its content.

For example, for a food blog with recipes, your potential readers should be able to identify at first glance that it is a blog related to cooking.

Be careful, if in the medium or long term, you decide to vary the topics covered on your blog, I advise you to choose a more vague domain name.

It is also important that your domain name is easy to read and pronounce. This makes it easier for your readers to remember!

Finally, it is essential to verify that the domain name exists.

Check the availability of your domain name

3. Choose your platform

There are different platforms that offer the possibility of creating a food blog for free: Word Press, Trumblr, Blogger.com, Squarespace etc.

Personally, I trusted the reputation of WordPress and I am happy with it! So I won’t be able to comment on other platforms.

WordPress is the most used platform in the world. It is perfect when starting out while ultimately offering many development options thanks to all plugins available. There is no need for computer knowledge to use WordPress. Additionally, you will find a lot of information online if you have any questions about using WordPress.

Difference between WordPress.org and WordPress.com

Be careful, however, not to confuse WordPress.org and WordPress.com. WordPress.org is the original WordPress platform which allows you to have access to all the functionalities of (themes, plugins etc.). This is the one that interests you.

However if you want to create your blog with WordPress.org you need a domain name and a host .

WordPress.com offers hosting and domain service. WordPress.com offers to create your blog for free, however you will not have access to plugins. Note also that if you choose this option your URL will include the words “ example .wordpress.com “which makes the address a bit long. WordPress.com therefore offers paid versions that allow you to choose your domain name, depending on availability of course, as well as to have access to the plugins.

After doing my own researches, however, I chose to use the version WordPress.org and hosting my site with an external hosting company.

4. Host your website

There are many hosts which offers to host your WordPress blog. Offers start at around € 2-3 per month.

I chose to host my site at Ionos . I chose the “WP Essential” package which allows me to have a domain name included.

See the offers on Ionos.com

This offer is absolutely sufficient to start a blog. It is inexpensive and will allow you to have access to the extensions available on WordPress.

5. Choose your appearance or theme

Now that you have chosen your platform, your domain name and your host, you will be able to start creating your food blog.

The first step is to choose the appearance of your blog also called theme.

WordPress offers many free themes . As you will be posting recipe articles regularly, I advise you to choose a theme suitable for blogging ie a format where new articles are highlighted rather than the pages.

WordPress themes for food blog

For a food blog, choose a theme that highlights your images, because we eat first with our eyes! You can search for themes by keywords. I advise you to do a search with the words “food”, “recipes” or “cooking” for example.

For my blog, I chose a theme proposed by Blossom . I tested several themes: Blossom Feminine , Blossom Recipe (specializing in cooking recipes) or Vilva . They are all very nice!

Once you have chosen the name of your blog, that you have selected your platform, possibly your host, and your theme, you can start writing your first recipes!
