How to make Apple Roses?

The essential tools and ingredients

It is a recipe that requires few ingredients and materials. Let me still give you some details on each of them:

  • Puff pastry: For this recipe, I am using puff pastry. I have not tried with another type of dough, but visually the puff pastry is the prettiest because it reminds the petals of roses. If you bought ready-made puff pastry, choose a rectangular shape.
  • Apples: You can use all types of apples. Choose apples that are firm enough so that the apple slices hold their shape well after cooking.
  • Cinnamon: Cinnamon adds flavor to this recipe. If you don’t like cinnamon or don’t have cinnamon, substitute with a little vanilla extract, a vanilla bean or vanilla sugar (in the latter case, decrease the amount of sugar slightly).
  • Mandolin: The whole technique of Apple Roses lies in cutting apples. These should be cut as thinly as possible so that they have the flexibility to bend without breaking. I am using a 2mm thick mandolin from Triangle Tools ( see the product ). If you don’t have a mandolin, cut the apples thinly with a knife. As explained in the recipe further down, if you apple slices are too thick, heat them for 30 to 45 seconds in the microwave to make them more flexible.

Note that you can also make this recipe with pears or nectarines in summer. Before going to the recipe, have a look at my video of the recipe!

Preparation

Preheat the oven to 175 ° C (conventional heat).

Cut the apples into quarters and remove the seeds. Using a mandolin or a knife, cut the apple quarters into thin strips.

If you are using a mandolin, your apple slices should be quite flexible. If you know how to cut it with a knife and the strips are still too strong, place them in a bowl and add a teaspoon of cane sugar. Heat in the microwave for 30 to 45 seconds depending on thickness.

Mix the sugar and cinnamon.

Cut the puff pastry crosswise to obtain 6 rectangles of approximately 25 cm by 6 cm. Sprinkle each rectangle with cinnamon sugar.

Then place the apple slices along the dough. Fold the dough over the apples. Then roll up the dough on itself. Place 2 drops of water to stick the paste and that the rose sticks well. See how to make the apple roses step by step in pictures.

Place the apple roses in a pre-oiled muffin pan. You can also place them in muffin wrappers.

Bake for 20 minutes.
