Baguette Garlic Bread
I love serving this garlic baguette as a side dish to a dinner with family and friends. It’s always a nice addition to a simple pasta dish, soup or salad!
I’ll show you two ways to prepare this garlic bread: with or without cheese. Both are incredible!
Why I Love Baguette Garlic Bread?
- Few Ingredients: With just 3 simple ingredients – garlic cloves, butter and parsley – this garlic bread is foolproof.
- Quick: From beginning to end, preparation takes only 15 minutes. What more can I say?
- Versatile: Leftovers make a great soup or salad croutons. Or, you can reheat this garlic baguette in the oven or toaster.
Why make Baguette Garlic Bread at home?
Easier and tastier than store-bought or take-out garlic bread, this version of homemade garlic baguette takes only a few minutes to prepare. Store-bought garlic bread contains preservatives, which can affect the taste and overall quality of the bread.
By making it from scratch, you’ll have full control over the ingredients and can enjoy a delicious, preservative-free garlic bread that’s both healthy and satisfying.
List of Ingredients
- Baguette: A baguette is a long, thin loaf of French bread with a crispy crust and a soft, chewy interior. For this recipe, you don’t need a fancy baguette but a simple store-bought or bakery baguette will be perfect.
- Butter: I use French butter with min 83 % fat. I prefer unsalted butter at room temperature to spread it easily. You can replace butter with olive oil for a vegan version.
- Garlic: It’s important to use fresh garlic cloves, much more flavor than dried garlic.
- Parsley: I use fresh parsley. You can replace the parsley with other fresh herbs such as chives, basil or coriander.
- Cheese: I used a simple grated cheese such as Emmental, Gouda or Mozzarella.
You will find the exact quantities in the recipe card.
How To Make This Baguette Garlic Bread?
- Preheat oven to 200°C / 390 °F. Slice the baguette into slices of about 3 cm using a serrated knife. Do not cut all the way through so that the baguette stays together.
- Chop the garlic and parsley.
- Mix the butter, garlic, parsley and a pinch of salt in a small bowl. Mash everything with a fork.
- Spread the garlic butter mixture between the baguette slices and on top. If necessary, add some cheese between the slices.
- Wrap the baguette in aluminum foil and place it on a baking sheet covered with parchment paper in case the butter leaks out to the foil.
- Place in the oven for 15 minutes. For a super crispy garlic bread, I like to open the aluminium foil and broil the baguette for another 2 minutes until golden brown.
- Serve warm.
How To Serve Garlic Baguette Bread?
- Pasta dishes: Baguette garlic bread pairs well with pasta dishes, especially those with a tomato-based sauce like spaghetti or lasagna. I really like to with my Pasta with Tomato and Feta or my Eggplant and Mozzarella Pasta.
- Soups and stews: There’s nothing like this garlic baguette to get even the most skeptical of soups to eat! Some of my favorites are my Healthy Tomato Soup or my Vegetarian Lentil Stew.
- Grilled meats: Baguette garlic bread is a great side for grilled meats, such as steak, chicken, or fish. The garlic flavor will complement the savory flavors of the meat.
- Salads: Add crunch to your salads by serving them with this garlic baguette. The bread will provide a nice contrast to the fresh greens and vegetables. It goes really well with a Tomato and Cucumber Salad or a Tuna and White Bean Salad.
- Appetizers: Baguette garlic bread can also be served as an appetizer on its own or with a dip, such as hummus or tzatziki.
With Or Without Cheese?
If you are a cheese lover, you can easily make a cheesy garlic bread. Cheese adds an extra layer of flavour as it melts in contrast to the crispy baguette.
Simply add grated cheese between the slices of baguette and on top after spreading the butter. I used grated mozzarella, but you can substitute your favourite cheese.
Geraldine’s Tip
- My “cheat” method: If you’re in a hurry, simply toast your preferred bread, brush it with olive oil, and rub it with a garlic clove. Or, spread with some roasted garlic, if you have any. Sprinkle with extra herbs if you like, no cooking is then required.
- Vary the flavors by using different compound butters: I particularly like this baguette bread with Lemon butter, a butter mixed with lemon zest and juice or my Tomato and Chilli Butter for more punch.
Frequently Asked Questions
The garlic baguette requires only 8 to 15 minutes of baking time. I like to add an extra 2 minutes under the broiler to make it even crispier. For optimal results, always preheat the oven.
You can also use an air fryer to cook your garlic baguette bread (200 °C / 390 °F).
Just use vegan butter instead of regular butter or olive oil and your favorite vegan cheese if you want to cheese it.
Garlic bread works best with a baguette. Its shape is ideal for the filling and serving it afterwards. But you can also make garlic bread with an ordinary bread, ciabatta, or brioche.
Garlic bread leftovers can be stored in a plastic bag wrapped in plastic wrap or an airtight container and put it in the fridge for up to 3 days.
Unless you really enjoy a strong garlic taste, I wouldn’t suggest storing this bread in the fridge for too long.
