For 6 servings, you need the following ingredients.

Ingredients

  • A puff pastry, rectangular about 250 g
  • 3 apples
  • 2 teaspoons of cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons of cane sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of butter

Are you missing an ingredient? Here are some tips on how to substitute certain ingredients.

Preparation

Preheat the oven to 175 ° C (conventional heat).

Cut the apples into quarters and remove the seeds. Using a mandolin or a knife, cut the apple quarters into thin strips. Heat in the microwave for 30 to 45 seconds depending on thickness.

Mix the cane sugar and cinnamon.

Cut the puff pastry widthwise to obtain 6 strips of about 25 cm by 5 cm. Sprinkle each rectangle with cinnamon sugar.

Then place the apple slices along the pastry, leaving 3 cm overhanging. Fold the 3 cm of dough over the apples.

Then, roll the dough on itself. Put 2 drops of water to stick paste and allow the rose to stand well.

Place the apple roses in buttered muffin tins in advance. Bake for 30 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I substitute some of the ingredients ?

As with every blog post, here are some tips for substituting ingredients in this recipe:

  • Puff pastry: You can replace the puff pastry with a yeast dough. You will thus obtain fluffy apple roses similar to cinnamon rolls.
  • Apples: You can replace apples with pears or peaches in the summer.
  • Cane sugar: You can replace cane sugar with white sugar. However, the cane sugar adds a caramel flavour that goes very well with the apples and cinnamon.
  • Cinnamon: You can remove the cinnamon or replace it with a little vanilla extract, but it’s the cinnamon that reminds you of Christmas!

Can we prepare these Christmas Apple Roses in advance?

Yes, you can make these Christmas Apple Roses a few hours earlier, which is perfect if you are preparing a whole menu at the same time.

To do this, add a dash of lemon juice to the apple slices so that they do not get brown, then continue the recipe until it is time to put them in the oven. Then set your muffin tins with the apple roses in the fridge for max. 12 hours. Then, just put the apple roses in the oven for half an hour before serving.

Can we make a vegan version of these Christmas Apple Roses?

Yes, for this you can either use a vegan puff pastry like the one proposed by Aline Made or replace the puff pastry by brick sheets also called filo sheets (like in my recipe for Filo Tart with Summer Vegetables).

Can we freeze these Apple Roses?

Yes, absolutely. You can make them in advance and freeze them. They can be kept for several months. To defrost, take them out of the freezer two hours before serving, then reheat them in the oven at 100°C for 5-10 minutes until the core is no longer cold.
