In winter, it is not easy to find ideas for toppings for your oatmeal. While preparing my Cranberry Compote with Vanilla and Cinnamon recipe, I thought it would go great with my oatmeal!

I simply added some frozen raspberries and a pomegranate I had on hand and in the end, the result was so good that I ate it all week. Here is my recipe for my Oatmeal with Cranberry Compote and Cinnamon.

Oatmeal with Cranberry Compote and Cinnamon

My basic oatmeal recipe

My basic oatmeal recipe is very simple: it’s all about proportions! The magic rule is 1 cup of oatmeal to 2 cups of liquid.

For the liquid part you can choosewater, milk, vegetable milk or a mix of water and milk. To make my oatmeal a little lighter, I recommend mixing vegetable milk and water (1 cup of each).

As for the quantity, you can adapt it to your needs as long as you respect the 1:2 ratio.

Then, I like to add some fruit to sweeten my oatmeal. The easiest way to do this is to add a mashed banana as it also adds creaminess to the oatmeal. However, if you don’t have a banana, you can add an apple or pear cut in small pieces.

Finally, if you feel like sweetening your porridge a little more, you can add a dash of agave syrup or honey. I often add a little cinnamon or vanilla extract to my oatmeal as well.

In short! There are many ways to vary your oatmeal recipe!

3 ways to prepare your oatmeal

There are three ways to prepare your porridge:

  1. Overnight: Ideal to save time in the morning or to prepare a breakfast to take away! To do this, pour all ingredients into a bowl or glass jar. Mix well and let stand in the refrigerator overnight (about 8 hours).
  2. Microwave: Place ingredients in a microwave-safe container. Heat for 2 to 3 minutes on high. Stir well once in between. Then let the porridge sit for 10 minutes to allow the oats to finish absorbing the liquid.
  3. In a saucepan: Pour all ingredients into a saucepan and bring the liquid to a boil. Then lower the temperature and cook over medium heat for 10 minutes. Let stand 10 minutes before serving.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I substitute some of the ingredients ?

As with every blog post, here are some tips for substituting ingredients in this recipe:

  • Oats: You can replace oats with barley flakes or chia seeds. If using chia seeds, use only 1.5 cups of liquid to one cup of chia (1:1.5).
  • Oat milk: You can replace the oat milk with another vegetable milk or a cow’s milk.
  • Banana: You can replace the banana with an apple cut into small pieces.
  • Cranberry compote : You can replace this compote by any other compote.
  • Toppings: You can vary the toppings according to your tastes and what you have on hand: frozen fruit, fresh fruit, peanut butter, almond butter, dried fruit, etc.

Can I make this oatmeal in advance?

Yes, absolutely. You can prepare it the day before (see above).

Can we freeze this porridge?

Yes, you can freeze the porridge. In this case, freeze it directly after preparing it, but let it cool down first. However, I advise you to prepare it the day before or in the morning because it will be better (see above)!
